Stephen Tanzer ~ "Cote-Rotie meets pinot noir"

2012 Delmas Syrah
SJR Vineyard Walla Walla Valley

"Bright red-ruby. Wonderfully perfumed, expressive nose combines raspberry, lavender, smoke, cocoa powder, mint tea and pungent white pepper: Cote-Rotie meets pinot noir. A sappy, suave, sweet midweight, delivering savory flavors of raspberry, lavender, licorice, minerals and espresso. Bright, harmonious acidity and a solid stony underpinning give this highly aromatic wine lovely backbone to support a leisurely evolution in bottle. (This wine has a pH of 3.9 following very light acidification.) Finishes very long and vibrant, with suave tannins and seamless use of oak. A remarkable wine considering that it’s from the vines’ sixth leaf. Steve and Mary Robertson own 9.6 acres of vines and sell their Grenache grapes to Greg Harrington."

92+ points.
