2014 Delmas Syrah
SJR Vineyard Walla Walla Valley

(50% whole-cluster vinification): Bright ruby-red. Wild, multifaceted nose combines aromas of blackberry, blueberry, bacon fat, crushed pepper and minerals accented by orange and tangerine rind, wild herbs, a touch of pyrazines and a high-toned suggestion of black olive; the nose of this wine alone can make the case for the Rocks District as a potentially world-class site for Syrah. The wine's dark berry, mineral and spice flavors are framed by a refreshing edge of acidity. There's a textural decadence to this wine but the finish is suave, dry and subtly persistent, featuring perfectly integrated long-chain tannins. Syrah in the style of a Clos de Bèze. A bottle of the 2012 next to this wine was even more perfumed and a bit more pliant, but this 2014 is still very young.
