Stephen Tanzer ~ “Utterly distinctive... Amazingly strong”

Arguably the toughest critic on the planet, Stephen Tanzer (Vinous), has just published a rave review of our 2013 Delmas Syrah using some choice words; "Utterly distinctive" and "Amazingly strong".

93 points.

2013 Delmas Syrah
SJR Vineyard Walla Walla Valley

"Good bright medium red. Knockout nose combines black fruits, red cherry, cranberry, bacon fat and a high-pitched hint of spicy bitters, complicated by smoke and earth notes; utterly distinctive. Saline and tactile in the mouth but very backward today, a bit more youthfully aggressive than the 2012 was a year ago, perhaps due to its pronounced crushed-stone minerality.

Finishes classically dry, subtle and very long. This will need time in bottle to gain in pliancy and absorb its touch of bitterness. Amazingly strong Syrah considering that this vineyard was only planted in 2007. The Syrah and Viognier were vinified in open-top bins with 50% whole clusters; 50% whole-berry Syrah was added to the top of the bins."
